Oh, right, the part where three weeks ago, I flew off to Korea to get married, and have been busy up the wazoo ever since, so if you've posted anything important in the last two weeks, tell me about it? :)

I feel mildly guilty that this is going to be a crosspost, but maybe y'all will forgive me when I say that I come bearing WEDDING PICTURES? :)

My Big Fat Korean Wedding

Jane (Hyoun's sister) and Sara (Hyoun's brother's girlfriend) in their hanbok. I am wearing something similar to Sara's hanbok under my robes. It starts out with fluffy white pantalons, then a white jumper layer with puffing to make the skirt part poof out. Then over that, another jumper that is white from mid-chest up, and pink from there down. (You can see where the split occurs in Jane's outfit - see how high her blue skirt goes up? That's how high the pink goes on mine.) Over that, there is a very cropped sleeved jacket, which you can see better on Jane's outfit than Sara's, though mine is closer in color to Sara's than Jane's - lime green body, dark purple tie and cuffs. Then over that goes the vest that Sara is wearing, except mine and Hyoun's are both dark purple with a light pink tie. And I feel like I'm forgetting a part of the main outfit, but our hanbok are in Tennessee right now because we couldn't fit them into our luggage.

[personal profile] hyounpark and I are standing in front of our transportation up the aisle. We're both supposed to be holding our accessories up to not see each other before the wedding, but, uh, we're modern? Note his sedan chair! Note what's behind me that is not a sedan chair!

Me in front of my box. Please note my arm position. I am holding it for the next couple of hours. While participating in complicated bows. Phoar.

Me in the box, windows open. The windows get shut for my trip up the aisle.

I haven't seen pictures of the next part of the ceremony yet, but in this picture, you can see the stage for what we were doing. The pillows were where we were sitting across from each other, and could kind of see each other through the table as we shared ceremonial Korean wine. It's hard to see, but on top of the table, there are two wooden ducks, and during the ceremony, I present the red one to Hyoun's mom, and Hyoun presents the blue one to my mom. (They're rented ceremonial equipment, and my mom was so disappointed afterwards that she didn't get to keep the duck, that she went on a duck hunt during the rest of our time in Korea to find a similar pair to bring home.)

us after the fact

In between wine-drinking-and-sharing and duck-presenting, we were doing a LOT of bowing. Half-bows, from the waist, deep (almost to perpendicular); full bows, prostrate on the ground. You can see Hyoun going down into a full bow here:

hyoun, bowing

Note that I am doing the same, while MAINTAINING THE PREVIOUSLY-MENTIONED ARM POSITION.

You can actually get a pretty good idea of all of the hair-aphernalia I was wearing from this pic, though I don't have a closeup of the hairstyle itself. Anyway, my hair was smoothed and curled and scraped back into a fancy braided bun at the nape of my neck. The pincushion-hat atop my head is secured around my head with an elastic, Alice band style. The large hair-stick was slid into my hair behind the bun, and the black scarf is draped over it and around the back of my head.

After we give our moms ducks, our dads get to come up and fling chickens into the air. I believe the higher they fly, the happier our marriage will be? But my head is so overloaded that I do not remember. My dad accidentally flung his towards the audience instead of straight up, so we had a number of relatives scatter when Projectile Chicken was launched their way.

And now, we come to my favorite part of the ceremony :) I don't think [personal profile] hyounpark enjoyed it quite so much ;)

piggy back ride!

Yes, that would be Hyoun giving me a piggyback ride. :D :D :D He then had to give both moms piggyback rides too, to symbolize that he was ready to support a multi-generational family. I wish I were more buff and could have given him a piggyback ride too, being more symbolically equal, but good lord, were those robes slippery; I'm not sure how I got perched up there in the first place!

In the following picture, you can both see the back of Hyoun's tall hat (it has wings! I do not know what those symbolize.), and the fact that I am not wearing the ceremonial shoes. (The ceremonial shoes were like ballet slippers, but less flexible and with a higher vamp; they kept falling off every time I tried to do a bow. I swapped back to my strappy flats before the ceremony.)

You can also see better the pink of my hanbok under my ceremonial robes, and a bit of Hyoun's Hammer-pants peeking out from under his. Also, the second scarf that drapes down my back from the headdress ornament. Also, the red dots that kept falling off my cheeks. (We went through several sheets of them during the ceremony.)

After that, we got a short "break" for the big table to be cleared away, to set up for paebaek. Said "break" consisted of lots and lots of posed photos with various family configurations.

Us with our parents:

Us with my family (and my brother actually smiled during a picture, wut, he is not known for doing this):

us and the Baers

Us with Hyoun's family:

Us with Hyoun's halmoni-dul (grandmas; I'm not positive I'm pluralizing or transliterating the hangul correctly):

Bonus: my right cheek sticker fell off. Again.

Convo with [personal profile] noghri when I was showing him wedding pics last night:

[personal profile] ursamajor: And us, with our dads.
[personal profile] noghri: They both look very presidential! Like it's an international summit, and Hyoun's dad is Kim Jong-il, and your dad is Bill Clinton.
[personal profile] ursamajor: ... does that make my mom Hilary?
[personal profile] noghri: ... no comment.

us and our dads

Anyway, after the picture-posing break, we go back in for paebaek, which is basically the part where we sit across the table from various configurations of relatives, serve them tea, have them give us good advice, and we bow to them.

After we serve Hyoun's parents tea, they get to throw chestnuts and dates into our waiting cloth. Chestnuts represent boys. Dates represent girls. We caught all seven. >_>

It's the end of a very long day. My dots are falling off. Hyoun's smile is falling off:

just the two of us

And we still have a reception to go to! Which included lots of food, lots of family, and lots of music. LOTS of music. Enough that there was basically a concert for us before we ate, and then karaoke throughout the meal.

Among the musicians was Hyoun's uncle (whose name I am blanking on right now, though I know it started with "Kyoung"), who is actually a pop star in Korea, a la Richard Marx. With fangirls and all. Anyway, he sang one of his songs for us, a love song:

pop star!

That's all the pics we've got for now! Though there are some more in my Flickr set that I was too lazy to bring over here; you can see them if we're Flickr friends :) It was a crazy and minutely-scheduled weekend, and being able to hop on a tour bus down to Gyeong-ju in the South with our family for the following three days was a lot more relaxing.

But we are marrrrrried! Kinda. The legal American ceremony in October will be smaller. But maybe I can get another piggy back ride there, too, for [livejournal.com profile] memerath to capture ;)

My mind kept going back and forth between "you look gorgeous!" and "my god, all that stuff looks heavy. Your poor poor arms!"

When you handed over the duck and poured tea, did you get to stretch your arms?
