I was talking with a friend about fairs yesterday, and now I'm both sad I'll be missing out on the Big E (because even though I'll be in New England next week, I'm flying home the day it starts), and enthusiastically making grandiose plans with said friend to go to the Minnesota State Fair Great Minnesota Get-Together next year, despite neither of us living in the Midwest.

I didn't grow up going to fairs; they were the province of children's fiction to me. All I knew about fairs was that there would be fried foods and thrill rides of questionable safety and contests ranging from biggest pumpkin to fattest pig to who could eat a whole pie the fastest; thanks, EB White. So when Scott basically dragged half our dorm to the Eastern States Exposition my freshman year, well, I fell in love.

Every time I went, we'd spend the majority of our time eating our way through the State Houses. Comparing clam chowders between Massachusetts and Rhode Island, comparing lobster rolls between Maine and Connecticut, eating all the maple sugar candy from Vermont, blueberry everything and loaded baked potatoes from Maine, the Finnish pancakes from Massachusetts, frozen lemonade from Rhode Island to wash it all down, along with cider and cider donuts and fried dough and kettle corn and fudge everywhere. (And of course, apple pie with cheese!) I don't think I could do a full 12 hour day there anymore, but when we went back in college and postgrad, we spread all of that eating across the entire day, and that gave us time to digest enough to go on spinny rides and not barf :)

Fast forward more than a decade since the last time I managed to make it out to Western Mass during the Big E, and the algorithm keeps showing me fair food from the Minnesota State Fair, the most recent post from Molly Yeh included. Even though my phone hasn't left the state of California since May, and the last time it was in Minnesota was over five years ago when we visited the SPAM Museum on our way across the country.

I strongly suspect it's because there was a week in August where everybody was talking ALL HOTDISHES ALL THE TIME. I knew about hotdish before that; I did date a Minnesotan, after all, and then Molly Yeh brought them into the broader cultural consciousness (at least in my foodie circles). There's even the Hot Dash in March every year where there's a hotdish festival at the finish line!

So now there's been an even more mainstream Hotdish Revival, thanks Tim Walz. Even if the ones I'm finding more intriguing are, like, Samosa Chaatdish. Or Little Moga-Hot-Dishu. Or Molly's Chinese Hotdish. Or this Tater Tot Hotdish Bowl with kimchi and bossam, though of course if I were going to turn it back into a proper hotdish of course there would be rice involved. Or Hot Tot Berbere Tater Dishinator (scroll down to Keith Ellison's contribution). Though I am not yet seeing a Filipino-inspired hotdish, peeps, does this mean I have to figure one out myself? Or a Hmong Hotdish, from Yia Vang of Union Hmong Kitchen and Vinai.

Which brings me back to drooling over the New Foods List for the fair, burnishing its reputation every year, best known for how over-the-top chefs go to make the most delicious, talked-about fair food item. I'm looking at you, "smoked sausage slices wrapped in bacon, filled with cream cheese and drizzled with barbecue sauce," the kettle-chip ice cream sandwich, the sweet corn cola float. But I'm also delighted to see:



And lutefisk bao?! I will bring my empty stomach and a Game Plan next year, Minnesota!

Kalbi and bulgogi Friday night, tapas at Blue Ginger Saturday afternoon, a clambake at Meghan and Ken's wedding Saturday night, and a pig roast at a blues bar Sunday night? Add up to an awesomely foodie weekend, but also Feeling. Very. Full.

We made twenty-eight dozen hamantaschen today, for values of we equalling me, [livejournal.com profile] noghri and Cris, [livejournal.com profile] fes42, [livejournal.com profile] bryghtrose, the LJ-less-as-far-as-I-know Jen, [livejournal.com profile] richenza and Jack. Baby Nathan mostly yawned and burbled through the proceedings, but he is only about five weeks old. (I believe he slept through any shaking of the grogger that occurred, which is kind of amazing.)

This means I have a container full of COOKIES sitting on my counter in the following flavors: apricot, blueberry, cherry, raspberry, strawberry, ginger, and various combos of Nutella and peanut butter. Nom.

Mother and future mother-in-law in town this weekend. Sense of "HURRY UP AND GET MARRIED ALREADY" raised. Feel surprisingly calm and optimistic because there are pretty dresses that look awesome on me in my future.

Also, amount of good food consumed: more than satisfactory. ;) Thai food both Friday night and again tonight (Zoe's moved across the street, and Pho 'n Rice that opened up in its place is pretty darned good! Tangerine shrimp and excellent pad see yew), Om for Saturday lunch (lamb sammich, hooray!).

Still alive! The South may be trying to kill me with cholesterol, but I'm still tickin'. ;) It's been a much-needed, relaxing, nearly responsibility-free vacation.

Tuesday: Arrived chez Park. Ate a wide assortment of Korean food. Napped frequently.

Wednesday: sliders, Crystalis, and multicultural appropriation in a Southern grocery store. Of which I highly approve and am vastly amused, being one of them crazy blended peoples and all ;) )

Thursday: Feast! Turkey, natch, with yummy gravy (at which Hyoun's mom kicks ass; must learn from the master) and cranberry-Asian pear chutney; apricot-chestnut stuffing, garlic mashers, candied sweet potatoes, cider-roasted veggies (carrots, parsnips, zucchini, shiitake mushrooms), buttered corn, pan de sal, sesame green beans, spinach salad with goat cheese and candied pecans and blueberry vinaigrette dressing; strawberry-rhubarb pie for dessert. And of course, more Crystalis. ;) And Bubble Bobble!

Friday: fannish references in an art museum, awesome pizza, deep-fried Oreos. )

Saturday: the Smoky Mountains, farmers' market natch, Biltmore Estate, wherein I have to cut myself off at a WINE TASTING, and seeing Emily and Ben! )

Today: it's off to the Smokies again for a wee bit of hiking, plus barbecue for Hyoun and steak for Jane. Plus finishing Crystalis when we get back for me!

Finally caught up on picture galleries! :)

Took a couple of days to recover, and then Saturday was Meghan's 30th, and my first ever "booze cruise." And as I predicted to [livejournal.com profile] kazulrw, I spent all of my time running around taking piccies and none of my time actually consuming alcohol. Hee! But it was actually quite fun - there was a rockabilly cover band, and yummy little appetizers, and a cool breeze blowing in off the ocean. Then Friendly's with [livejournal.com profile] melissaagray and [livejournal.com profile] fes42 and [livejournal.com profile] stranger78, Apples to Apples at the afterparty, and then driving down Route 1 at 3 am. You're only as old as you feel!

Yesterday, I made the mistake of dairy when it was both 95f out and the first day of my period. So [livejournal.com profile] hyounpark brought me Tylenol Flavor Creator, since I can't swallow pills, and my god, this is like EXACTLY what I was hoping for as a kid. Granted, I also thought I'd be the one to invent it (since "normal people swallow pills" and thus nobody cared about making medicine taste tolerable), until I couldn't wrap my head around the chemistry involved, but still! I am going to be very sad when litigious American society eventually runs this product off the market because some idiot didn't keep their medicines locked away firmly enough, and their kid drinks an entire bottle and has to go to the hospital and the parents don't dare show weakness by assigning any amount of blame to themselves.

Anyway, it's funky. I thought it would be some sort of clear syrup that you mixed flavor crystals into, but it's a cherry-based syrup, and you get a bunch of flavor packets with the package. You pour out the syrup dosage into the measuring cup, then dump the flavor crystals directly on top, and then chug immediately. On reflection, I'm honestly not 100% sure this is actually kid-oriented, because I felt like I was doing a shot. True, I needed to take the full three teaspoon dose, and most kids will be fine with the recommended 1-2 tsp, which is much more "sip" and much less "down the hatch!"

So yes, that's how we spent our first anniversary, building furniture (well, okay, I watched) and me semi-loopy on new drugs. *snicker* We'll make up for it later, but tonight is girly night!
