Ha yeah, *plenty* of times I'd be covering my eyes and be like, "Somebody tell me when the goo is off the screen?", listening for musical cues that might suggest the scary part was over :D
And I learned *so much* about things I liked reading from fic, even if I was never much of a fic writer myself. Good at character vignettes; never had a plot in mind that would fit, but always having fun reading others' and making suggestions both helpful and chaotic. Different writing styles, who I would trust to make close reading worth my while, what versions of "show not tell" worked for me, how things held together or didn't. What I was willing to ignore for a story; what utterly yanked me out of it. And how somebody wrote carried over to what they were like in person.
